Expressive Arts Therapy is different from Art Therapy or any of the other creative therapies in that it uses all of the disciplines of the arts intermodally - this means that we use mark making, sounds, imagination, narratives, and many more forms of creativity over the course of a session. This method is the newest of the creative disciplines, and was codified in the 1980s, drawing on the knowledge of experienced practitioners such as Steven K Levine, Dana Halprin, Shaun McNiff and more.
No! Yes! Both! Since we are more focused on imagination, creativity, attunement, and embodiment of healing practices, there is no prerequisite for knowing how to do anything arts related, and any creative output will be kept confidential and used specifically for healing and exploring. If you know how to draw and want to do more; great! If you don't want to draw at all; also great! We will find what creative and imaginative modalities work best for you over the course of the treatment.
There is a fair amount of talking, especially at the beginning of online counseling sessions, as we get to know each other and as I develop a solid case formulation and history of the presenting problem. The way we talk, however, will be oriented towards the expressive arts in that I will use metaphors, sounds, and gestures to get past our cognitive and rational way of thinking of things and into the feeling body and emotional mind.
